Nationals use nine-run seventh to rout Astros

Baseball Betting Lines

05/31/2010 - Houston, TX (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Carlos Maldonado and Ryan Zimmerman each hit a three-run homer to highlight a nine-run seventh inning, as the Washington Nationals demolished the Houston Astros, 14-4, in the opener of a four-game set at Minute Maid Park.

Zimmerman finished 2-for-2 with four RBI and three runs scored, while Adam Dunn contributed a three-run double and knocked in a total of four runs for the Nationals, who improved to 3-4 on their 10-game road trip. Washington had lost two straight and four of six entering the game.

Luis Atilano (5-1) allowed four runs -- three earned -- on six hits with a pair of walks and struck out a batter while improving to 4-0 in five road starts this season. He lasted 6 2/3 frames.

Michael Bourn had an run-scoring triple and scored twice for Houston, which has fallen on hard times, winning only four times in its last 17 games.

Roy Oswalt (3-7) took the loss after lasting only 2 1/3 innings before getting ejected for arguing balls and strikes by home plate umpire Bill Hohn. The right-hander allowed four runs on as many hits with three walks and three strikeouts. He was replaced by Gustavo Chacin, who tossed 2 2/3 innings in relief of Oswalt and also hit his first career homer, a solo shot in the third inning.

"Roy was getting frustrated with the calls and it kind of escalated from there," Houston manager Brad Mills said about Oswalt's ejection.

Washington manufactured a run in the first to open the scoring. Cristian Guzman doubled leading off, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Nyjer Morgan and crossed the plate on a sac fly from Zimmerman.

Carlos Lee's infield run-scoring single in the home half tied things at 1-1.

However, Oswalt had a rocky top of the third. The Nationals loaded the bases on a pair of singles and a walk before Dunn stepped in an laced a three-run double to right to make it 4-1. Then with a 3-2 count on Josh Willingham, Oswalt was ejected for arguing balls and strikes. Chacin came in and retired the next two hitters after Willingham walked.

Chacin then helped his own cause with a leadoff homer to right in the home third. Atilano worked out of some two-out trouble in the fourth and Washington put another run up in the fifth on an RBI single by Willingham.

Already up 5-2, the Nationals broke it open in the seventh, pushing nine more across. With runners on second and third and nobody out, Dunn's infield single brought home a run. Willingham worked a walk to load the bases, and two batters later, Ian Desmond dropped a single just inside the right field line for a two-run single, then took second on an error with Willingham making it to third. Maldonado then cleared the bases with a three-run shot to left for an 11-2 game.

The Nationals still weren't finished as Guzman and Morgan reached on back-to- back singles and Zimmerman followed with a three-run homer to right. Bourn's RBI triple and first baseman Adam Kennedy's error on a slow roller off the bat Jeff Keppinger allowed another run to score in the home seventh to make it 14-4.

Tyler Walker came on and retired the final batter in the seventh and pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth inning to close out the game.

FOOTBALL TRASH TALK

NFL Football Trash Talk

Trash talk has a place in every competitive endeavor (except baseball; those stirrup-wearers are too busy chewing on their sunflower seeds and their supplements to worry about what their opponents are doing).

Fantasy sports is no exception. Any intelligent discussion of the subject would probably start with a thesis statement or a definition of terms. Thankfully, this wont be an intelligent discussion.

Let me just say that I am happy to take a place in this space alongside my talented colleagues, even our commissioner. (You should see how she bleats like a demented paper boy about league fees on our fantasy site).

Trash talking, I would argue, is primarily about amusing your friends, their sheeplike demeanors and sloping foreheads notwithstanding. The best place I have found for football trash talking is at www.SportsAlarm.com.

Beyond the entertainment factor, though, I would recognize that the sophomoric ritual has one advantage, when properly applied. It magnifies your fantasy triumphs and mitigates your fantasy failures by transforming the eventual point total into an afterthought. Winning makes it seem like your opponent really is a truss-owning, lapel-pin-wearing nitwit. And in defeat, trash talk can be the air bag to break the fall from your hyperbolic heights. The plug-necked yahoos on your team, you can say, will be sacking groceries by the end of the season.

The best trash talk, in my view, is layered and nuanced. And it doesnt focus only on your opponents team. It picks apart your opponent. The idea is to create a shock-and-awe-scale blizzard of nonsense, and the goal is to make your opponent drop his hands from his keyboard in exasperation.

What team does your opponent root for? Accuse a Giants fan of having a Joe Namath pillowcase. Wheres your opponent from? Give a look of concern no matter his reply, then say, I'll try to type slower for you next time. Is your opponent into politics? Label everyone a tax-and-spend corporate shill.

Cap all that with a liberal application of irrelevance. For instance, dont just conclude by saying your opponent is a twerp who drafts like my grandmother. Say that your opponent is a sweater-wearing, eyebrow-plucking twerp who drafts his team about as well as Zsa Zsa Gabor gave acceptance speeches at the Oscars. By the time your foe makes sense of that, his starting running back will have had puppies.

But what about you? Hmm? Recall a memorable slam? Have a tried-and-true technique? Know someone who seems impervious to insult? Take a moment and tells us about it. Put together some (fit-for-publication) thoughts. You wont be too busy returning phone messages from your friends, Im sure, to reply.

In addition to the trash talking, the Sports Alarm has a huge gallery of high resolution pictures of beautiful women and models in bikinis. The most popular models are: Lindsay Lohan, Carrie Underwood, Alessandra Ambrosio, and Paris Hilton.
